Memorizing Pi to 100 Digits

Published on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 in , , , ,

This is a quick tutorial on how to memorize hundreds of digits of Pi, as originally taught in Arthur Benjamin's book, Secrets of Mental Math.

Before beginning, you should be familiar with both the Link System and Major/Peg System, as this video kind of glosses over them.

Here are the sentences used to remember the first 100 digits of Pi:

  • My turtle Pancho will, my love, pick up my new mover Ginger.
  • My movie monkey plays in a favorite bucket.
  • Ship my monkeypuppy Michael to Sullivan's backrubber.
  • A really open music video cheers Jenny F. Jones.
  • Have a baby fish knife so Marvin will marinate the goose chick.
To take these systems even farther, and to learn them in AND out of order, check out my 400 Digits of Pi tutorial in the Mental Gym.

Note to Scam School viewers: Welcome! This is just the video portion of my site. Check out the main Grey Matters blog by clicking here.

In the September 15th episdoe of Scam School, as shown above, Brian Brushwood gives a link to this site as part of the credits!

Thank you for the special mention, Brian! It's especially generous considering that so many other people sent it in.

I talk about this episode in more detail in my post, Scam School Meets Grey Matters...Again!.

Full Video Index

Published on Friday, April 06, 2007 in

While I post videos of amazing feats here with descriptions, I also like to maintain a full index of the original links on their respective sites. They are listed in pulldown menus below, divided up by format. Each individual video is listed alphabetically by the performer's last name, screenname or title.

Originally, these links were hosted in the sidebar, but it has become too large and unwieldy to update this on almost every page of the Grey Matters site.

Instead of the index itself, you will now see "Full Video Index" in the sidebar, which will be linked to this post. Also, as new videos are added, this post will be updated.

YouTube Videos on iTunes/iPod!

Published on Friday, September 08, 2006 in

If you've been enjoying the YouTube videos of mind feats here, or any other YouTube video for that matter, you probably have at least one or two favorites that you'd like to watch over and over again without going online and searching for them. If so, the answer is here!

Two free programs have been recently released that allow you to download YouTube videos, and automatically encode them for playing on both iTunes and your video iPod.

For the Mac users, there's PodTube, which requires the use of Safari to function, since it checks for the frontmost Safari window containing a YouTube video. The Windows version, called iTube, can use any browser, but you must copy and paste the URL (web address) into iTube.

Multiple Videos in One!

Published on Sunday, May 14, 2006 in

Thanks to YouTube's Playlist feature, I can now bring you more than one video in a single post!

In the filmstrip on the right, you can either click any of the videos you see there, or use the arrows to scroll back and forth through the list to see more videos of mental feats from YouTube. This post will automatically be updated as I add more videos to it, so bookmark this post, so you can easily check for updates!

If you wish, you can simply bookmark the list on YouTube. You are also free to post this video collection on your own blog or website, without hosting a single file! Simply copy the code in the box below, and paste it into your blog or website where you want the player to appear:

Update (4/11/07): Unfortunately, YouTube has changed their software so that only the first 20 videos of any playlist show up. The full Amazing Mental Feats playlist is still being updated, but they will unfortuantely no longer appear in the multi-video player.

Welcome to Grey Matters Videos!

Published on Thursday, May 11, 2006 in

Welcome to the new video section of Grey Matters! I can't really call this a vlog (video blog), as these videos are not of me giving my thoughts. Instead, Grey Matters videos is intended to be an archive of people performing amazing mental feats, including memory demonstrations and lightning calculations.

When possible, I will try to embed the video in the entry itself, but there will also be entries to which I will simply link to the videos. Originally, I intended the videos to simply be available as a list in the rightmost column, where they are still available, but this list didn't give me room to describe what is being performed on the video, and why they were added to the list. Thus, I have added an entire video section.

The comments will always be on, so if you have any any comments, or suggestions where I can find other videos, please let me know!
